Pregnancy, especially during its first months, is a stressful and challenging time full of life changes. This study examined whether past negative and present fatalistic perspectives moderated the association between hair cortisol concentration (HCC) and perceived stress in women in early pregnancy. Participants included 94 women (M = 31.68, SD = 4.49) in the first trimester of pregnancy. Women completed questionnaires assessing time perspective and perceived stress. Moreover, the first 3 cm of scalp-near hair were collected for cortisol-level analysis. Two moderation analyses were used to test hypotheses. The results showed that past negative and fatalistic perspectives moderated the association between HCC and perceived stress. There was a significant negative association between HCC and perceived stress in women with high levels of past negative perspective and in women with high levels of present fatalistic perspective. The results are interpreted in the context of the allostatic load and wear-and-tear theory. These results extend our knowledge of time perspective by measuring its relationship with cortisol secretion and perceived stress during early pregnancy.
