Streszczenia

Research Subject. The reference point for the presented research results was the COVID-19 pandemic period, which, according to the WHO decision, lasted from March 11, 2020, to May 5, 2023. This study presents arguments indicating that the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was not only an epidemiological challenge but also a systemic crisis that disrupted the functioning of all elements within the healthcare structure in many countries worldwide in an unprecedented way. Faced with various difficulties arising from a dynamically changing and unpredictable situation, the resilience of the healthcare system— in terms of maintaining continuity of care and health security— largely depended on medical personnel resources and the capacity for interprofessional cooperation. These changes specifically influenced the relationship between physicians and pharmacists. Research Objective. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the interprofessional relationships between pharmacists and physicians regarding the frequency of establishing contact, commitment to patient welfare, division of professional competencies, collaboration skills, and the level of mutual respect and trust. Material and Methods. A nationwide, anonymous survey using an original, self-designed questionnaire was conducted among pharmacists and physicians following the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents assessed the impact of the pandemic on the interprofessional relationships between pharmacists and physicians across six key elements of cooperation, with the options to indicate a positive change, a negative change, no change, or no opinion. Approval from the Bioethics Committee was obtained for the project. A total of 568 correctly completed surveys were qualified for empirical analysis. Results. In every case, the “no change” category predominated in the assessments of representatives from both professional groups. Approximately 24–39% of the surveyed pharmacists and physicians stated that the pandemic resulted in positive changes in their relationships, particularly regarding the frequency of establishing contact and commitment to patient welfare. Conclusions. In the opinion of the majority of respondents, the pandemic did not become a significant impulse for redefining interprofessional collaboration between pharmacists and physicians. At the same time, a large group of respondents confirmed the occurrence of positive changes, while negative ones were indicated only marginally. Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic, physician, pharmacist, interprofessional collaboration, healthcare system.
